Video: James Franco as Allen Ginsberg (Howl)

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge fan of beat poetry and novels. They had such interesting, sometimes tragic (sometimes not) lives, especially those like Ginsberg who were targeted and marginalized during their lives for rubbing society the wrong way – even if that wrong way seems innocent to us now. Of course there were those who lived common, everyday lives and still managed to write their own white light even if they didn’t live it – but this post is about the late, great Allen Ginsberg.

Howl is an independent film starring James Franco as Allen Ginsberg (writer of the poem Howl, for which the film is named) and it centers around his obscenity trial in the late 1950s concerning the title poem. Franco – I couldn’t have cast him better. The rest of the cast looks stellar, too, and it’s really a film that needed to be made. Here are some clips:
